Desk Cleaning Routine: How Often and What to Use
Your desk collects dust, crumbs, and bacteria over time. A 2023 study found that the average desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Here is a simple cleaning schedule that keeps your workspace healthy without taking too much time.
Daily (2 minutes). Wipe your desk surface with a microfiber cloth. Clean your monitor screen with a dry microfiber cloth. Tidy cables and put away items that belong elsewhere. This daily reset alone keeps your desk looking organized.
Weekly (10 minutes). Disinfect your keyboard and mouse with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe. Clean your monitor with a screen-specific cleaning solution. Vacuum or dust your desk surface and cable tray. Wipe down your desk chair armrests.
Monthly (20 minutes). Deep clean your cable management. Unplug everything, dust cables individually, and re-route them. Clean your monitor bezels and stand. Wash or replace your desk pad. Clean your headset ear cushions and microphone.
What to Avoid. Do not use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners on your desk. They damage finishes and screens. Do not spray liquid directly onto your equipment. Spray onto a cloth first. Avoid paper towels on screens -- they cause micro-scratches.
