Desk Ergonomics for Different Body Types: Short and Tall Guide

Most ergonomic guides assume average proportions. If you are under 5 ft 4 in or over 6 ft 2 in, standard measurements might not work. Here is how to adapt.

For Shorter Users (under 5 ft 4 in). Your chair needs to be higher than average to get your thighs parallel to the floor, which means your feet might not reach the ground. A foot rest is essential. Look for one that is 4-6 inches high with adjustable angle. Your desk might feel too high even at its lowest setting. A keyboard tray mounted under the desk is the best fix. For monitors, you will need a taller stand or an arm that raises higher than standard.

For Taller Users (over 6 ft). Standard desks at 29-30 inches are often too low. Look for an adjustable standing desk that can reach 31-33 inches. Your chair needs extra seat depth, at least 19-20 inches. A monitor arm is essential because most stands do not raise high enough. Look for extended-height arms rated for taller setups.

Universal Principles. Regardless of height: elbows at 90 degrees, feet flat on floor (or foot rest), monitor top at eye level. The measurements change but the neutral positions stay the same. A tape measure is the most underrated ergonomic tool.
