Best Desk Plants That Thrive in Low Light Offices

If your desk faces away from windows or is in a windowless room, you can still have plants. These species tolerate low light levels and only need water every 1-3 weeks.

1. ZZ Plant. The most tolerant low-light plant. Needs water every 2-3 weeks. Glossy dark green leaves add visual warmth. Almost impossible to kill. Grows slowly so it will not outgrow its pot quickly.

2. Pothos. Trailing plant that cascades off the edge of a desk or shelf. Thrives in low to medium light. Water once a week. Grows quickly and is easy to propagate by cutting stems.

3. Snake Plant. Handles low light but grows slower than in bright light. Needs water every 2-4 weeks. Known for air purification. Tall vertical leaves add height without spreading across your desk.

4. Peace Lily. Tolerates low light and actually prefers indirect light. Droops visibly when it needs water, making it easy to know when to water. Produces white flowers even in low light. Keep away from direct drafts.

5. Cast Iron Plant. Lives up to its name -- it is nearly indestructible. Tolerates very low light, irregular watering, and temperature swings. Slow growing with broad dark green leaves.

For all low-light plants: water less frequently than you think. Most low-light plant deaths are from overwatering, not underwatering. Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
