Desk Work and Eye Health: Beyond the 20-20-20 Rule

The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds) is a good start, but there is more you can do to protect your eyes during long desk sessions.

Monitor Distance and Position. Your monitor should be at arm's length (20-30 inches). Any closer increases eye strain. The top of your monitor should be at or slightly below eye level, so you look slightly downward at the screen. Looking slightly down puts less strain on your eyes than looking straight ahead.

Lighting Balance. Your room should not be significantly brighter or darker than your screen. An overly bright room makes your screen look dim by comparison, forcing your eyes to work harder. A monitor light bar balances screen and ambient light by illuminating your desk surface without adding screen glare.

Blink Reminder. People blink 66% less often when looking at screens. Dry eyes cause irritation, blurred vision, and headaches. Place a sticky note on your monitor that says Blink. Use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry. A humidifier on your desk adds moisture to dry office air.

Blue Light. Blue light from screens can disrupt sleep patterns. Use Night Shift or similar blue light filtering software after 4 PM. Most monitors have a built-in low blue light mode in their settings menu.
