Desk Yoga and Stretching: 5-Minute Routines for Desk Workers

Sitting at a desk for hours creates tension in your neck, shoulders, back, and hips. These 5-minute routines target the most common desk work tension areas. Do them every 2-3 hours.

Neck Rolls (30 seconds). Slowly roll your head in a circle, dropping your chin to your chest, ear to your shoulder, and head back. Repeat in both directions. This releases tension from staring at a fixed screen position.

Shoulder Shrugs (30 seconds). Lift both shoulders toward your ears, hold for 3 seconds, and release. Repeat 5 times. Roll your shoulders backward 5 times. This counteracts the forward hunch of desk posture.

Seated Spinal Twist (1 minute per side). Sit up straight. Place your right hand on your left knee and gently twist your torso to the left. Hold for 30 seconds. Switch sides. This releases lower back tension from prolonged sitting.

Wrist Stretches (1 minute). Extend your right arm in front with palm up. Use your left hand to gently pull your fingers back. Hold 15 seconds. Repeat with palm down. This prevents wrist and forearm tightness from typing.

Standing Forward Fold (1 minute). Stand up, bend forward at your hips, and let your arms hang toward the floor. Bend your knees slightly. Hold for 30 seconds. Slowly roll up one vertebra at a time. This stretches your entire back and hamstrings.
