Monitor Resolution Guide for Desk Workers: What You Really Need

Higher resolution is not always better for desk work. Here is what resolution you actually need based on your work type, monitor size, and viewing distance.

1080p (Full HD). Fine for 24-inch monitors and smaller. At 27 inches and larger, pixels become visible and reduce text sharpness. Best for budget setups and secondary monitors.

1440p (QHD). The sweet spot for most desk workers. Sharp text, good screen real estate, and lower GPU demand than 4K. At 27 inches, 1440p offers the best balance of size and clarity. Recommended for coding, writing, and design.

4K (UHD). Best for 27-inch and larger monitors. Extremely sharp text and images. Gives you about the same physical pixel count as four 1080p monitors in one screen. Ideal for video editing, photo work, and anyone who reads dense documents. Requires a good GPU and scaling at 150-200%.

5K and Ultrawide. 5K is ideal for creative professionals who work with high-res images and video (like the Apple Studio Display). Ultrawide (3440x1440 or 5120x2160) replaces dual monitors with a single wide screen. Good for programming and timeline-based work.
